FAQ
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
From a Chinese Medicine(CM) perspective, acupuncture stimulates specific points on or near the surface of the skin, where obstructed energy may gather. This directs the energy along channels, opening the flow of nourishment to blocked areas. The channels, known as meridians, are a series of energetic pathways affiliated with specific organs and systems.
From a western scientific perspective, studies show that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the way in which neurotransmitters and neurohormones are released. This acts as a “reset button” to the body’s stress response.
During acupuncture trial sessions, monitored areas of the brain respond similarly to brain response during meditation. Subjects report feelings of peace and relaxation.
Research has found that acupuncture activates the body’s opioid systems, reducing pain.
CM optimizes blood circulation to affected areas, reducing pain and inflammation. Documentation shows positive impact on the hypothalamus, altering stress response. Other reported results include improved immune function and beneficial changes in regulatory processes of blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature.
Many newcomers to acupuncture anticipate it feeling like a shot at the doctor’s office. They are often pleasantly surprised to find they didn’t even notice the pin going in! We use solid, extra-fine, single-use needles, and we do not target veins, arteries or specific body structures. We neither inject nor withdraw fluids, so the process is comparatively quite mild. Some clients may detect a qi (pronounced “chee”) sensation, indicating an activation of energy flow. This could be perceived as a temperature shift, a throbbing, a tingling, a dull ache, or even a radiating sensation from one body region to another.
DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
Most of the area’s top insurers have limited or no coverage for acupuncture services. This is why we offer payment on a voluntary scale to fit your budget. SAS does not submit your bill to your insurance company, but we can provide a detailed receipt for reimbursement, or for your records. We encourage you to check your policy and/or discuss your wish for future coverage of our services with your insurer. We do accept payment with a health savings account or flexible spending card.
DOES INSURANCE COVER ACUPUNCTURE?
When seeking the right practitioner for you, ask questions about background, education, and style. Does s/he have experience in your specific area(s) of need? Does s/he have NCCAOM certification? This is an important credential. Is s/he is a graduate of the Master’s or Doctorate level of training in Chinese Medicine (CM)? There are different types of acupuncture, both within the field of CM and in other medical systems. As acupuncture has grown in popularity, this effective tool has been incorporated into other professional modalities. Be sure to select someone you like and trust; choose a person with a manner that’s comforting to you. Finding the right match for your personality can be so important! Chiropractors, Physicians, Naturopaths, and Physical Therapists all have access to short certification programs which allow them to use acupuncture needles, sometimes called “dry needling.” After completing between only 20 and 200 hours of training, these practitioners are limited to “technician” level protocols and basic safety precautions. Their repertoire does not include the same diagnostic and advanced acupuncture technique as that of the CM practitioner. While some of them make choices to deepen their studies in the complex system of CM theory, many do not. In most cases, they use acupuncture more simplistically, as a tool within their own medical system. By comparison, graduates of the Master’s or Doctorate level of training in CM receive a minimum of 700-900 hours of rigorous training, including a comprehensive study of anatomy, physiology and pathology from both western and eastern perspectives. They further complete a supervised internship where they hone diagnostic skills and techniques working with actual patients. A CM program covers five modalities: acupuncture, bodywork, exercise, diet/lifestyle, and herbs. Practitioners may further specialize in different styles such as Japanese, Korean, 5-element, Classical Chinese, or Traditional Chinese acupuncture. Your highly-trained CM practitioner is able to tailor each session to your specific conditions and personal needs, producing extremely effective results. When seeking an acupuncturist, confirm that s/he is nationally certified through NCCAOM. Passing these board exams demonstrates a mastery of bio-medicine, safety, Chinese herbs, Chinese medical theory and acupuncture.
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT ACUPUNCTURIST?
Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows free access to the areas below your elbows and knees. It’s a good idea to eat a light meal or snack before your acupuncture appointment. Avoid arriving hungry, or too full. Fill out your intake form, provided on this website, and if possible, either submit it online or print out a copy and bring it to your appointment. Be sure to list all your current medications and supplements. Review our current public safety plan.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY VISIT?
Yes! While many report feelings of calmness and euphoria and even improvements in their condition after a single visit, acupuncture is designed so that each session builds upon the last to create longterm, positive effects. Your individualized treatment plan is determined during your first visit. This gives you an idea of what to expect in order to achieve your goals. In general, the longer you have suffered from the issue, the more visits will be required to regain balance or achieve the results you seek. Chronic conditions tend to resolve more slowly than acute ones, due in part to body memory creating a complex pattern of imbalance. Through acupuncture treatments, we break and release old programming.
DO I NEED TO COME MORE THAN ONCE TO FEEL BETTER?
No. Your practitioner evaluates your condition based on your current medical information and plan. Acupuncture has no negative effect and is not contraindicated for your medications. It may, however, increase the efficiency of your previous protocols. In certain circumstances, clients will notice a lessening of need for some medications, such as pain relievers. You should routinely consult with your physician when you start a new treatment, and inform him or her of any health changes.
WILL RECEIVING ACUPUNCTURE AFFECT MY CURRENT MEDICATIONS?
The most commonly reported “side effects” include better sleep, feelings of relaxation and an increased ability to handle stress! Some people experience an emotional release, or rush of strong emotion, during or after treatment. This is a harmless part of the process and may act as a breakthrough, providing insight into how one’s emotions affect physical health. Flu-like symptoms, such as aches, fatigue or mild fever, though uncommon, occasionally occur. Some clients may experience small amounts of bleeding, bruising or swelling at one or more needle sites. These symptoms are not generally a sign of a problem. In some cases, they actually may indicate that your body is working to rid itself of toxins built up in your system. Other risks include fainting, muscle spasms, and in very rare cases, nerve damage. MANAGING SIDE EFFECTS If side effects occur, they usually do so within 48 hours of the treatment and do not generally last long. If you experience any side effects, tell your practitioner. S/he will know whether or not they are a normal part of the process and can advise you how to minimize them. After your session, it is a good idea to sit quietly in relaxation. A gentle walk or mild exercise can also be helpful. Avoid big meals, rich foods, vigorous exercise, and alcohol. Drinking plenty of water post-treatment supports your detoxification process.
ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?
Yes! Besides acupuncture, each treatment may include acupressure and lifestyle recommendations if indicated. We may suggest beneficial exercise, such as the internal martial arts practice of qi gong. Herbal supplements might be of value in supporting your treatment plan. SAS carries an extensive assortment of high-quality supplements. We may also provide recommendations for other modalities including: *SHIATSU: A deeply relaxing physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. Shiatsu translates from Japanese as “finger pressure.” A Shiatsu practitioner uses touch, pressure and manipulative techniques to adjust the body and balance its energy flow. *MOXIBUSTION: A heat therapy technique using the Chinese herb mugwort (artemisia vulgaris) to heat an acupuncture point. “Moxa” is commonly rolled into a stick, lit, and held over specific areas of the body. It may also be placed onto the handle of an acupuncture needle for deeper penetration of heat. It is especially beneficial for treating arthritis and pain from certain debilitating conditions. *GUA SHA: Also known as “spooning” or “coining,” Gua Sha literally means “to scrape away heat”. It is performed by applying pressurized strokes to the back, utilizing a specialized scraping instrument. Gua Sha is recommended for a range of ailments including muscle aches, fevers, digestive problems and gynecological issues. *TUI NA: A form of Chinese body work Incorporating actions of brushing, kneading, rolling, pressing, or rubbing the areas between each of the joints, known as the eight gates. Tui Na is used for a variety of musculoskeletal and organ-related issues. *CUPPING: Glass or plastic cups are applied to the body using suction, and remain in place for about 10 minutes. This practice relieves swelling, stimulates circulation and enhances the acupuncture treatment. *All of these may be voluntarily booked as additional services if recommended by acupuncturist.
